==科研主攻==
中国科技史、中国炼丹术史、中国天文学史、传统中医学、中医史、中国哲学及中国宗教、中国与希腊科学比较等。与李约瑟同为知名汉学家。 作为[[李约瑟]]之后“第二代”学者中的杰出人物，席文对中国科技史研究影响深远。2008年第12届国际东亚科学、技术与医学史研讨会上特设了“席文教授荣誉日”，以表达对他的敬意。

==专著成就==
席文教授主要研究[[中国科学史]]，涉及中国[[炼丹术]]史、中国天文学史和中国医学史等多个领域。

他以[[哈佛大学]]博士论文为基础出版的《''伏炼试探''》（1968）是研究中国炼丹术的开山之作。
1969年发表《''中国早期数理天文学中的宇宙和计算''》，是首位西方学者对中国古代历法数理部分的详细研究。
1987年发表《''当代中国的传统医学''》，对中国医学史的研究提出了全新的视角。

席文教授的研究都是在仔细研读原始文献的基础上，运用社会学、文化人类学等理论与方法进行多元化解释。他的《''为什么科学革命没有在中国发生——难道是真的没有吗？''》（1982）是对“李约瑟问题”及其相关研究取向的深刻批判，可以说是开启了中国科技史研究新“范式”，这在他的多篇论文如《沈括》、《王锡阐》和《哥白尼在中国》之中得到体现。

著有精选论文集《''中国古代科学''》（1995）和《''中国古代的医学、哲学和宗教''》（1995）。
与英国著名希腊科学史学者[[劳埃德]]（G.E.R. Lloyd）合作，从比较的角度研究中国古代科学和古希腊科学，合著《''道与名:早期中国和希腊的科学和医学''》（2002），其中提出“文化整体”（cultural manifold）概念，即把科学与当时具体的文化、社会、政治等因素，作为不可分割的整体来研究。

席文教授出版的《''授时： 1280年中国的天文学改革''》，是他对《授时历》历时40年研究的结晶。
2009年“''竺可桢科学史讲席''”由中国科学院自然科学史研究所与北京大学哲学系联合举办，4月13日至4月22日于北京大学举行科学史系列讲座。席文（Nathan Sivin）教授是本次邀请的讲席教授，授课主题为“科学史方法论”。

2011年出版《''科学史方法论讲演录''》。梳理了50年来科学史从智识史到社会史再到文化史的发展历程，通过精当的案例分析，展示了科学史家将社会学和人类学进路用于历史研究所导致的新图景，论述了平衡科学史中智识精英和普通人作用的重要性，阐述了比较相同时期不同文化和不同时期同种文化中的科学的方法，诠释了作者提出的“文化簇”概念及其作用，从方法学上总结了科学史发展的现状，前瞻了该领域的新趋势。是一部集思想性和具性为一体的著作，对研习汉学、史学、哲学、人类学和科学者犹富启发性。
