美国州份，是指美国联邦内部的任意一个成员州，权利是在个体的州和联邦政府之间分配。在美国宪法下，联邦政府可以对明显由宪法赋予的内容立法，这就使得权利的管制中心仍然由州保留。[1]
由独立宣言而从英国独立的美国，刚开始的时候有13个州。州可以通过国会的批准加入联邦，美国一共有50个州。
起初的时候，在美国宪法中没有关于"州份是否可以独自任意脱离联邦"的法律。但是在经过美国内战后，1869年，经由联邦法院对于得克萨斯州 v. 怀特(Texas v. White)的判决决定，若有任何一州要脱离联邦，那么其决定必须经过其他州的许可，才可合法离开联邦。[2]
