[[莫迪博·凱塔]](Modibo Keïta)為首任總統。1968年[[穆薩·特拉奧雷]](Moussa Traoré)發動政變上台。1991年[[阿馬杜·圖馬尼·杜爾]](Amadou Toumani Touré)發動軍事政變並遵守承諾，還政於民選政府。1992年由非洲團結正義黨[[阿爾法·奧馬爾·科納雷]](Alpha Oumar Konaré)當選總統，成立第三共和國，並於1997年連任。2002年由前軍政府領導人[[阿馬杜·圖馬尼·杜爾|杜爾]]當選總統，2007年連任，其施政方針為加強北方發展及減少國內貧窮，執政期間政局整體穩定。
