在1507~1898年間莫三比克島是[[葡屬東非]]([[葡屬莫三比克]])的首都行政和商業的中心，直到19世紀末被目前莫三比克的首都-[[馬布多]](Maputo；官方名稱為Lourenço Marques)所取代。
