惠灵顿（Wellington）新西兰首都。惠灵顿是世界上处于最南端的首都。城市面积266.25平方千米，市区人口近20万，大区人口近50万。平均气温夏季16℃左右，冬季8℃左右。

自1972年两国建交以来，中新经贸关系一直稳定、健康发展。二十世纪九十年代以来，双边贸易增长较快。1991年至1999年间，据中国海关统计，双边贸易额年平均增长率达12%。1997年8月，新西兰在西方国家中率先与中国就中国加入世界贸易组织双边市场准入问题达成协议。2004年4月，新西兰政府正式承认中国完全市场经济地位。
