微软在2006年7月11日终止了对Windows 9x系列的支持。DirectX系列在8.0a版停止对Windows 95的更新、9.0c版停止对Windows 98与Me的更新；Visual Studio 系列最后可将 Windows 98 作为目标平台的版本是 Visual Studio 2008。如今，即使是开源项目的Mozilla浏览器，在不加工修改的情况下，也无法在Windows 9x上运行。
