螟蛾夜晚活动，趋光性强，特别在闷热无月光的黑夜会大量扑灯，产卵具有趋嫩绿习性，水稻处于分蘖期或孕穗期，或施氮肥多，长相嫩绿的稻田，卵块密度高。刚孵出的幼虫称蚁螟，从孵化到钻入稻茎内需30~50分钟。蚁螟蛀入稻茎的难易及存活率与水稻生育期有密切的关系:水稻分蘖期，稻株柔嫩，蚁螟很易从近水面的茎基部蛀入，还有，孕穗期稻穗外只有1层叶鞘;孕穗末期，当剑叶叶鞘裂开，露出稻穗时，蚁螟极易侵入，其他生育期蚁螟蛀入率很低。因此，分蘖期和孕穗至破口露穗期这两个生育期，是水稻受螟害的"危险生育期"。

被害的稻株，多为1株1头幼虫，每头幼虫多转株1~3次，以3、4龄幼虫为盛。幼虫一般4或5龄，老熟后在稻茎内下移至基部化蛹。
