太妍在1989年3月9日出生於[[韓國]]的[[全羅北道]][[全州市]]{{NoteTag|name=regionaldialect|1=3月17日SBS《Healing Camp》中透露她完全不會講全州方言。}} 。家庭成員除了開眼鏡店的父親和母親外，還有一位哥哥（金志勇）>和一位妹妹（金夏妍，1998年生）。中學時期在全州藝術高等學校就讀，並且接受[[歌唱]]跟[[舞蹈]]課程訓練。

太妍於中學時期開始於SM Academy（[[SM Entertainment]]旗下訓練學院，已於2013年關閉）接受聲樂訓練，SM Academy的主席Lee Solim說太妍是他最有印象的學生。太妍的爸爸以前也想過當歌手，所以當太妍問爸爸「我應該去嘗試一下嗎？」，爸爸立即讚好，並說自己這方面懂得很多，更鼓勵太妍去[[首爾]]。父母都對太妍的決定很是鼓勵。<ref>[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9g87V50aGg SNSD MTV EP 9 Taeyeon.] Retrieved on April 30, 2015.</ref> 於是，太妍每個星期天都由爸爸陪同由家鄉[[全州市|全州]]到[[首爾]]去上歌唱班，師承 [[郑淳元|The One]]。2004年，太妍參加[[SM Entertainment]]舉辦的第八屆SM青少年選拔大赛，獲得最佳歌手獎及大會獎，並因此正式獲得SM Entertainment的聘約<ref name=earlylife/> ，成為公司的練習生。
