考文四足动物标本馆最初名为考文脊椎动物标本馆，始建于1951年，以第一任馆长伊恩·麦克塔格特·考文（Ian McTaggart Cowan）博士的名字命名，后来合并了多个标本馆，包括K. Racey鸟类和哺乳动物标本馆、HR Macmillan 鸟类博物馆，还有J. Wynne收集的动物学资料<!-- J. Wynne zoology materials -->。
