北京大学历史系长江讲座教授、美国新泽西州罗文大学(Rowan University)历史系教授，英国《中国的历史学》主编 ，国际史学史、史学理论委员会理事(2005-15年间兼秘书长)。
现为美国新泽西州罗文大学(Rowan University)历史系教授，国际史学史、史学理论委员会理事(2005-15年间兼秘书长 )，北京大学历史系长江讲座教授，美国宾夕法尼亚大学(University of Pennsylvania)访问教授 (2008,2010) 和普林斯顿高等研究院(Institute for Advanced Study)访问研究员(2010)，英国《中国的历史学 》(Chinese Studies in History(A&HCI journal published by Routledge Taylor & Francis，教育部历史学A类期刊 ) )主编， Storia della Storiografia杂志编委。
主要研究兴趣为中外比较史学、史学理论与史学史和中国思想文化史。
