1944年至1947年間，他在[[英國皇家海軍後備隊]]服役。其後於[[牛津大學三一學院]]畢業，並在[[哈佛大學]]以[[傅爾布萊特計畫|傅爾布萊特學者]]身分完成英語[[碩士學位]]<ref name="ODNB" />。
1951年，開始正式在父親創辦的喬治·艾倫與昂溫出版公司工作，起薪為每週35[[英鎊]]<ref name="ODNB" /> 。曾經與父親共同經手《[[魔戒]]》的首次出版<ref name="麥可·懷特">{{Cite book|title=托爾金傳|url=https://archive.org/details/tuoerjinzhuantol00whit|last=麥可·懷特著|last2=莊安祺譯|publisher=聯經|year=2002年10月|isbn=957-08-2512-X|location=臺北}}</ref>。在1968年父親去世後，接任公司董事長一職。1990年，喬治·艾倫與昂溫出版公司被[[哈潑柯林斯]]出版集團併購，昂溫對此表示反對，並辭職抗議<ref name="ODNB" /> 。
