[[美國]][[芝加哥大學]]著名教授[[保羅·塞里諾]]（Paul C. Sereno）等人認為於同一地層發現的[[華夏鳥]]是中國鳥的次異名。他們指出這兩者的結構非常相似，同樣有[[尾綜骨]]的[[獨有衍徵]]。<ref name="Serenoetal2001">{{Cite book|author=Sereno, Paul, Chenggang, Rao, Li, Jianjun|year=2001|chapter=''Sinornis santensis'' (Aves:Enantiornithes) from the Early Cretaceous of Northeastern China|title=Mesozoic Birds: above the heads of dinosaurs|editor=Chiappe and Witmer, ed.|publisher=University of California Press}}</ref>不過，中國古生物學家[[周忠和]]等人卻指出華夏鳥較中國鳥為大，第一指較短及直，其上的爪也較長，故相信兩者應有分別。另外於2008年，[[李建军 (消歧义)|李建軍]]等人在描述[[查布華夏鳥]]的論文中亦認為兩者是有分別的。<ref>{{Cite journal|author=李建军、张玉光、张笠夫、李志恒|year=2008|title=内蒙古鄂托克旗早白垩世华夏鸟的又一发现及其飞行能力分析|journal=地质通报|volume=29|issue=7|pages=988-92}}</ref>後來於2010年的研究中認為兩者在爪及指的長度、[[臀骨]]及尾綜骨的大小也有分別，故兩者並非異名。
