衣索比亞人民革命民主陣線(衣革陣)執政以來，以發展經濟為重點。但自1991年以來政權由國內的第三大族群提格雷人為主的衣革陣把持，加上社會資源分配不均，使得奧羅莫人和阿姆哈拉人不滿。2005年反對黨以選舉舞弊為由不承認選舉結果，並於首都等主要城市煽動示威暴力活動。2012年梅萊斯病逝，[[海爾馬里亞姆·德薩萊尼]]就任衣革陣主席及總理。
