保罗说：
“约翰和我一起写的这首歌，是我的灵感。我们在报纸上看到一个新闻，是一个女孩离家出走，到现在还没找到。那时有很多这类事情，足够让我们创作一个故事了。于是我开始写歌词：she slips out and leaves a note and then the parents wake up ...（她留下一个纸条，偷偷的离开了。她的父母醒来……）很让人心酸的。我喜欢这样的词，我拿去给约翰看，他添加了保持音, 这首歌的结构中有一个很好的地方是它一直保持着同一个调，我们以前的创作会改调但是这首歌保持在C调，非常吸引人。这真是一个漂亮的小把戏，我认为它起了很好的效果。 ”当我给约翰看时，他正在做Greek chorus。那对父母的看法是：'We gave her most of our lives, we gave her everything money could buy.'（我们给了她生命中的所有，我们给她任何能买到的东西。）我想这在一个孩子离家出走的故事中是可信的，也许恰恰就引用了父母们的话。而那句著名的关于一个卖摩托车的男人的歌词，人们一直说那是Terry Doran，我一个在汽车店工作的朋友，但那只是个虚构的了，跟<Yellow Submarine>中的海舰长一样，他们不是现实中的一个人。”
保罗提到的新闻来自每日镜报的头条，是关于一个叫做Melanie Coe的女孩。虽然保罗虚构了歌曲中的绝大部分内容，Coe，这个当时17岁的女孩，声称歌曲中的故事跟真实情况相仿。实际上，Coe没有“跟摩托车销售员碰头”，而是跟一个荷官，另外是在下午离开的当时她的父母在上班，而不是歌曲中所描写的在早晨父母仍在熟睡时离开。Coe在十天后被找到，因为她在男朋友工作的地方暴露了行踪。 当她回到家时，她怀孕了，然后做了流产。
一个很离奇的巧合，Coe实际上在三年前曾跟保罗见过面，是在1963年ITV一个叫做Ready Steady Go!的跳舞比赛，保罗把Coe选为冠军。Coe曾出现在2008年5月的每日镜报上 [5]，而她的最新消息2010年11月24日是接受BBC节目The One Show的关于这首歌的采访。
录制过程
在保罗想要录制这首歌时，他了解到George Martin没有时间。Martin一向负责披头士歌曲的管弦谱曲。保罗于是联系了在Martin那里工作的Mike Leander。这是第一次披头士的歌曲没由Martin谱曲（是唯一一首得到披头士同意的，Phil Spector对<Let It Be>的弦乐谱曲没有得到保罗的批准，甚至没告知他）。对于保罗的举动，Martin感觉受到了伤害。但是他还是监制了这首歌，并负责弦乐部分。竖琴部分由Sheila Bromberg弹奏，他是第一个出现在披头士歌曲的录音室歌手。
这首歌的立体声版本比单声道混音版速度较缓，结果就是使用了较低的半音程。<the Beatles in Mono>套装中附带的歌词本中有提到，但是没有说明原因。一本叫Mojo的杂志在2007年揭露这是为了让保罗的声音听起来更年轻还有tighten the track。
评价
当评价<Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band>时，作曲家Ned Rorem形容“<She's Leaving Home>可以跟舒伯特的任何创作相提并论”。 在1967年4月，保罗在洛杉矶拜访Beach Boys的Brian Wilson，给他试听Sgt.Pepper。保罗给Wilson和他的妻子在钢琴上演奏了<She's Leaving Home>，“我们都哭了，”Wilson说，“太美了。”
Lennon-McCartney创作组合凭借这首歌获得了1967年全英原创音乐大奖（Ivor Novello award）的最佳创作音乐和歌词奖。
