保羅說：
「約翰和我一起寫的這首歌，是我的靈感。我們在報紙上看到一個新聞，是一個女孩離家出走，到現在還沒找到。那時有很多這類事情，足夠讓我們創作一個故事了。於是我開始寫歌詞：she slips out and leaves a note and then the parents wake up ...（她留下一個紙條，偷偷的離開了。她的父母醒來……）很讓人心酸的。我喜歡這樣的詞，我拿去給約翰看，他添加了保持音, 這首歌的結構中有一個很好的地方是它一直保持着同一個調，我們以前的創作會改調但是這首歌保持在C調，非常吸引人。這真是一個漂亮的小把戲，我認為它起了很好的效果。 」當我給約翰看時，他正在做Greek chorus。那對父母的看法是：'We gave her most of our lives, we gave her everything money could buy.'（我們給了她生命中的所有，我們給她任何能買到的東西。）我想這在一個孩子離家出走的故事中是可信的，也許恰恰就引用了父母們的話。而那句著名的關於一個賣摩托車的男人的歌詞，人們一直說那是Terry Doran，我一個在汽車店工作的朋友，但那只是個虛構的了，跟<Yellow Submarine>中的海艦長一樣，他們不是現實中的一個人。」
保羅提到的新聞來自每日鏡報的頭條，是關於一個叫做Melanie Coe的女孩。雖然保羅虛構了歌曲中的絕大部分內容，Coe，這個當時17歲的女孩，聲稱歌曲中的故事跟真實情況相仿。實際上，Coe沒有「跟摩托車銷售員碰頭」，而是跟一個荷官，另外是在下午離開的當時她的父母在上班，而不是歌曲中所描寫的在早晨父母仍在熟睡時離開。Coe在十天後被找到，因為她在男朋友工作的地方暴露了行蹤。 當她回到家時，她懷孕了，然後做了流產。
一個很離奇的巧合，Coe實際上在三年前曾跟保羅見過面，是在1963年ITV一個叫做Ready Steady Go!的跳舞比賽，保羅把Coe選為冠軍。Coe曾出現在2008年5月的每日鏡報上 [5]，而她的最新消息2010年11月24日是接受BBC節目The One Show的關於這首歌的採訪。
錄製過程
在保羅想要錄製這首歌時，他了解到George Martin沒有時間。Martin一向負責披頭士歌曲的管弦譜曲。保羅於是聯繫了在Martin那裡工作的Mike Leander。這是第一次披頭士的歌曲沒由Martin譜曲（是唯一一首得到披頭士同意的，Phil Spector對<Let It Be>的弦樂譜曲沒有得到保羅的批准，甚至沒告知他）。對於保羅的舉動，Martin感覺受到了傷害。但是他還是監製了這首歌，並負責弦樂部分。豎琴部分由Sheila Bromberg彈奏，他是第一個出現在披頭士歌曲的錄音室歌手。
這首歌的立體聲版本比單聲道混音版速度較緩，結果就是使用了較低的半音程。<the Beatles in Mono>套裝中附帶的歌詞本中有提到，但是沒有說明原因。一本叫Mojo的雜誌在2007年揭露這是為了讓保羅的聲音聽起來更年輕還有tighten the track。
評價
當評價<Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band>時，作曲家Ned Rorem形容「<She's Leaving Home>可以跟舒伯特的任何創作相提並論」。 在1967年4月，保羅在洛杉磯拜訪Beach Boys的Brian Wilson，給他試聽Sgt.Pepper。保羅給Wilson和他的妻子在鋼琴上演奏了<She's Leaving Home>，「我們都哭了，」Wilson說，「太美了。」
Lennon-McCartney創作組合憑藉這首歌獲得了1967年全英原創音樂大獎（Ivor Novello award）的最佳創作音樂和歌詞獎。
