早年生活
年輕的德里克
德里克·雅各比出生於倫敦東區的雷頓斯通。母親戴莤·格特魯德是麵包店店員，父親阿爾弗德·喬治·雅可比是煙草商。曾祖父是19世紀移民到英格蘭的德國人。德里克·雅各比形容他的童年生活是快樂的。在上中學時，他加入了當地的舞台劇團。在六年級時，德里克·雅各比在舞台劇《哈姆雷特》中扮演角色，並在愛丁堡邊緣藝術節的表演中大獲好評。
18歲時， 德里克·雅各比獲得獎學金前往劍橋大學聖約翰學院攻讀歷史。他在劍橋大學扮演過許多角色，包括哈姆雷特。由於在《愛德華二世》中的精湛表演，他在畢業後立刻被邀請至伯明罕儲備劇院。
演藝生涯
在伯明罕儲備劇院，德里克得到勞倫斯·奧利弗的賞識。後者邀請他回倫敦，並介紹他到皇家國民劇院。
1963年，德里克在皇家國民劇院的開出演出劇《哈姆雷特》中扮演雷歐提斯，與彼德·奧圖演對手戲。同年，德里克在皇家國民劇院的舞台劇《奧賽羅》中扮演卡西奧，並在1965年的同名電影中扮演同一角色。
2013年，德雷克與伊恩·麥凱倫在電視劇《極品基老伴》中扮演一對共同生活了48年的同性情侶。
個人生活
德里克·雅各比是位出櫃的同志。他的伴侶是Richard Clifford(也是位演員)，二人從1977年開始相戀，並於2006年3月--英國同性婚姻法律生效四個月後登記結婚。
