鱗根柳葉菜，多年生直立草本，在地面下根狀莖頸部生出鱗根出條；鱗芽肉質，近球形，鱗葉次年生莖基部，革質，倒卵形，長5-8毫米。莖高23-30厘米，粗1.5-3毫米，不分枝，稀少分枝，稜線密生曲柔毛，其餘無毛。 [1]
鱗根柳葉菜形態特徵
葉對生，花序上的互生，草質，無柄，卵形，長2-3厘米，寬1-1.4厘米，先端銳尖至短漸尖，基部寬圓形，邊緣每邊具16-28枚銳鋸齒，側脈每側4-5條，脈上及邊緣疏生曲柔毛，其餘近無毛。
花序開花前稍下垂，被曲柔毛與腺毛；苞片葉狀，常長過子房中部。花在芽時稍下垂；花蕾狹卵狀，長3-5毫米；子房長1.2-1.8厘米，被曲柔毛與腺毛；花柄長3-6毫米；花管長0.7-0.9毫米，徑1.8-2毫米，喉部具一環長柔毛；
萼片披針狀長圓形，長3.5-4.5毫米，寬0.7-1.2毫米，疏被曲柔毛與腺毛，基部連接處常簇生長柔毛；花瓣玫瑰紫色，倒心形，長4.5-5.5厘米，寬2.5-3.5毫米，先端凹缺深0.7-1毫米；花葯寬卵狀，長0.5-0.6毫米，徑0.3-0.45毫米；花絲外輪的長2.5-3毫米，內輪的長1.5-2毫米；花柱長2.5-3毫米，直立，無毛；柱頭棍棒狀至近頭狀，長1-1.2毫米，徑0.7-0.9毫米，開花時伸出外輪花葯。
蒴果長4.5-6厘米；果梗長0.6-1.5厘米。種子狹倒卵狀，長0.9-1毫米，徑0.35-0.37毫米，頂端具短喙，淡褐色，表面具乳突；種纓白色，長5-6毫米，易脫落。[2]
花期7-8月，果期8-9月。

Leaves herbaceous, sessile; cauline blade ovate, 2-3 × 1-1.4 cm, subglabrous except for sparsely strigillose margin and midvein, base broadly rounded, margin acutely serrulate with 16-28 teeth per side, apex acute to shortly acuminate. Inflorescence and flowers slightly nodding. Sepals 3.5-4.5 mm, sparsely strigillose with tufts of long spreading hairs at junctures of sepal bases. Petals rose-purple, 4.5-5.5 mm. Stigma clavate to subcapitate, entire. Capsules 4.5-6 cm, sparsely strigillose and glandular; pedicels 0.6-1.5 cm. Seeds light brown, 0.9-1 mm, papillose, with short chalazal collar; coma white, detaching easily. Fl. Jul-Aug, fr. Aug-Sep. Chromosome number unknown.
