据唐朝[[张彦远]]《历代名画记》记载，南北朝梁元帝画有《芙蓉醮鼎图》，是中国最早的画荷之作。五代、北宋时期的著名花鸟画家如[[黄筌]]、[[徐熙]]、[[赵昌]]等都有不少荷画作品，可惜早已湮没<ref name="Wang张行言1982">{{cite book|author1=Qichao Wang|author2=张行言|title=荷花|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=Pf0zAAAAMAAJ|year=1982|publisher=中国建筑工业出版社}}</ref>。
